Management Concept for Running Water Bodies

The primary objective of management concepts of running water bodies is to create a comprehensive plan or concept that serves as a technical foundation for the maintenance, expansion, and enhancement of especially running water bodies. This plan outlines how to restore a water body to a more natural state while considering existing constraints. It also integrates relevant planning initiatives, such as Natura 2000 sites (SAC and SPA), ensuring coordinated and effective management.

A development concept of a running water body includes guidelines for improving preventive flood protection, enhancing species and communities around the water body, retaining nutrients, and improving the landscape’s appearance. It is important to note that the planned development concept is a legally non-binding technical plan. Essentially, it serves as a framework for the development of a running water body, aligning with the development vision for the specific type of water body (see Zerbe & Wiegleb 2016) and coordinating various planning efforts (Schmidt 2018). The proposed measures are then detailed in implementation plans, such as river restoration projects. Funding opportunities are available at both state and federal levels to support the development and implementation of the running water body development concept.
